Stainforth

Stainforth is another pretty village just outside Settle, possibly best known for its waterfall or foss where salmon leap upstream.

The walk down to the falls is short but steep - not such fun coming back up! - but it's a pretty one, mostly traffic-free, and with lovely views over the surrounding countryside.

I was surprised to find a lot of people sitting and standing around, trying to spot salmon, and they're the reason my photos are all of one section of the series of falls. I didn't spot any salmon myself, but my husband did, and I caught the movement of heads when other bystanders did.

Back up the hill then to the village itself which is well worth exploring - there's a church, an art gallery/gift shop, and an interesting pub which was unfortunately just changing to new ownership and not serving meals. Like other places from this short break, it feels like a place I'd return to.
